An Oxford man has been arrested after armed police responded to reports of an axe attack.

Armed officers responded to the incident on Magdalen Road at around 2.40pm today (October 21).

A 54-year-old man from Oxford was arrested on suspicion of inflicting grievous bodily harm.

He remains in police custody at this time.

Muhammad Azam, 48, who owns Noor Supermarket, said he was outside the shop with delivery driver Malik when a man came up to them and started swearing. 

“He came back with an axe and whacked the top of his head,” he said. Pictures showed a crimson line on his crown.

Oxford Mail: Police called to Magdalen Road

Some workmen nearby said they heard shouting and saw a delivery driver .

“Next I knew, he was holding some tissue,” one said.

His colleague told the Mail: “The police turned up and told us to get out of the hole.”

A Thames Valley Police spokesperson said: "At around 2.40pm this afternoon (October 21) we received reports of an assault with injury on Magdalen Road. Officers attended the scene.

"A 54-year-old man from Oxford was arrested on suspicion of inflicting grievous bodily harm. He remains in custody at this time."
