Children in Kennington will enjoy action-packed visits to the playground thanks to the parish council.

The council has invited four play equipment suppliers to come up with proposals to modernise the play area off Playfield Road.

Chairman Peter Biggs said: "We surveyed the village and found that people wanted new play equipment.

"We concentrated on Playfield Road, because the equipment on the playing fields is in the worst shape.

"It's been in a bad way for some time and really needs improving. It's our main project at the moment."

Mr Biggs said the parish council would approach Oxfordshire County Council for money once councillors picked the design they wanted.

The county council recently received £1m from the Government for a three-year programme to upgrade and build children's play areas.

Mr Biggs added: "Nowadays, you don't get much for less than £50,000."

Parents Sarah Hitchen and Karen Reaney represent Kennington Toddlers Group on the committee.

Mrs Reaney said: "I think it's very important we expand the Playfield Road site.

"We're trying to focus on the young people and encourage children to play and enjoy the outdoors, but the equipment we've got now is a bit out of date. The new equipment will be better designed and cater for all ages."
