Two hotel venues near Oxfordshire have been announced among the best hotels and destinations by the readers of a global travel publisher.

Each year travel website Conde Nast Traveller asks its readers to send in entries to over a dozen awards categories.

As well as 'friendliest city' awards, the website also asks for the best hotel and restaurant suggestions across the UK, Europe and around the world.

The Swan at Streatley near the village of Goring has won best the title of 'new or recently renovated hotel'.

The website said it loved "the riverside location with attractive terrace located directly beside the Thames".

The restored 17th-century inn is set on the Thames riverside in the Chiltern Hills only separated from the river by water meadows and gardens, it observed.

The website said the dog friendly hotel was family friendly too and owners, the fashionable Coppa Club, had brought in their "signature home-from-home philosophy" in the "warm, designer yet homely décor".

"There’s nowhere better for hosting a dinner party, celebration or intimate meal for two," it said, adding that recreational activities "are also found in abundance".

A fully-equipped gym with sauna and steam room, massage and physiotherapist treatments, and a yoga studio are all available on-site.

Paddle boarding and rides on electric motor boats can also be arranged, as well as scenic picnics on the water.

"In short, this is an all-in-one destination designed to help you switch off, relax and spend quality time with friends and family in a beautiful riverside setting," the publisher concluded.

And Whatley Manor Hotel and Spa in the Cotswolds was crowned winner of the green practices and sustainability category.

The reviewers said they loved "driving past the open gates and into the cobbled courtyard to be eagerly met by a member of the Whatley Manor team".

"High on luxury and passionate about sustainable hospitality (the hotel has pledged to achieve net zero emissions for energy and its supply chain), Whatley’s restaurant has been awarded a Green Michelin star," the publisher said.

The website said "wellbeing is high on the agenda" with a float pod, private hot tub, and spa treatments on site.

The Aquarias Spa has a hydrotherapy pool, thermal cabins including a Himalayan salt cabin, infra-red sauna and tepidarium.

The reviewers concluded: "It’s all about attention to detail in the 12 bedrooms and 11 suites furnished in a definitive international style that’s completely welcoming with the ambience of a country home.

"Note to film buffs, Whatley’s cinema can be hired during your stay."
