A caravan caused large tailbacks of traffic after getting stuck on an historic bridge crossing the River Thames in Oxfordshire.

Drivers said the caravan got stuck on the Grade I listed bridge in Radcot at around 12.30pm this afternoon (October 16) with it taking around 25 minutes for it to be moved.

The stone bridge, which dates back to the 13th century, forms part of the A4095 which links Faringdon with Carterton.

One eyewitness, who wanted to remain anonymous, said: "The caravan became stuck halfway over the bridge.

"A number of people got out of their cars and supported the couple to get the caravan over the bridge safely. It was stuck for about 20 to 25 minutes.

"There was a large queue of traffic coming towards Radcot from Faringdon.

"There needs to be better signs, information on Satnavs and use of some common sense to try and prevent this from happening as it is a weekly occurrence at the minute."

Oxford Mail: Caravan stuck on Radcot bridgeThe narrow bridge is struck several times a week on average, according to staff at the nearby Olde Swan pub.

Staff said vehicles have hit the bridge "countless times" this year.

General manager Brandon Wheatcroft said drivers of HGVs and coaches ignore diversion signs.

He said: "From the Swindon direction they are not even meant to come this way and from the other side they are meant to go round by Witney. But they keep trying.

"This year is the worst I've seen it. Before it was every couple of months but now it's several times a week.

"Coaches keep trying it too and they get stuck."

It is believed that the bridge was built in 1200 and could be the oldest bridge across the river.

In 1387 there was a major battle at the site between troops loyal to Richard II and an army led by Henry Bolingbroke, Early of Derby, later Henry IV.
