No wonder there isn't funding for Oxford in Bloom this year (Oxford Mail, July 5) when the city council's incompetent financial management allows costs for the redevelopment of Bonn Square to escalate by some half a million pounds.

To cap it all, to say that there would be a small cost implication for taxpayers is clearly misleading at best.

Of course the shortfall has to be met by us taxpayers - all the city council is trying to do is shift the way we pay for this from council tax to income tax or VAT!

When will the council put in place basic financial controls which industry has as a norm - and stop regarding the council taxpayer as a soft touch?
