A nature trail with a twisting path and ancient woodland is inviting families to soak in its sights this Autumn.

The Hinksey Heights Nature Trail in the Vale of White Horse, includes a 1.5-mile circular walk as well as a longer route that connects Chilswell Valley with Harcourt Hill, the Hurst and Cumnor.

Parts of the valley are lined with boardwalks and there are tables on one end of the trail for visitors to have a drink and snack.

Friends of Hinksey Heights member Nick Thorn said: “Autumn is a wonderful time to get your boots on and get outdoors.

“Many people think this is when the countryside goes to sleep, but it’s a great time to get to know our resident birds a bit better, marvel at the amazing bounty of berries on the bushes and start to understand the remarkable cycle of life that is taking place right under our noses.”

The reserve is an example of rare alkaline fen, a wetland habitat found mostly in East Anglia, Anglesey and elsewhere in Oxfordshire.

Cycling is not permitted on the trail and visitors are urged to keep dogs on leads and out of ponds.

The trail is not accessible for prams or wheelchairs due to the nature of the terrain.
