Two sisters who lost their father to bowel cancer were among 1,000 walkers who took part in the Oxford Moonlight Stroll.

Lucy and Sarah Clive's achievement in finishing the nine-mile walk was all the more remarkable as Lucy completed most of the walk on crutches.

Lucy, 25, from High Street, Dorchester, broke her right femur in a car accident last July.

But she was determined to complete as much of the walk as possible on her feet in memory of her father Robin.

She managed more than three-quarters of the walk on crutches before her sister pushed her in a wheelchair.

Lucy said: "I am just quite competitive and a bit stubborn. I was determined to walk as much of it as I could.

"We did the walk last year as our dad was at Sobell House hospice. I feel fantastic this year as I have really made an effort."

Sarah added: "Lucy managed to walk seven miles so we are really proud of her for that.

"The walk was a lot better than last year because the weather was really good.

"The rain held off until five minutes after we finished, which was great."

The walk began at St Edward's School in Woodstock Road at 10.30pm on Saturday.

Those taking part walked past famous Oxford landmarks including Christ Church, Magdalen Bridge and Radcliffe Square, before tucking into bacon rolls prepared by airmen from RAF Benson.

Fundraiser Kevin Game said the walk raised £100,000 for the Headington hospice, which cares for up to 20 terminally ill patients at a time.

He said: "The rain stopped and the wind died down, so it was perfect.

"The atmosphere was brilliant. I watched them all come out after the warm-up and it was like a huge swathe of yellow coming out of the school.

"I went to sleep with my face aching from grinning so much."

Lesley Dent, 46, from Wise Avenue, Kidlington, said: "I would like to see a lot more men doing it next year, because it was mainly women.

"Everybody was friendly - it was a really nice occasion."
