The University of Oxford has ranked top of the Times Higher Education World University Rankings for a record eighth year.

It has beat 1,904 universities from 108 countries to the top spot.

Stanford University came in at second and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) ranked third on the list.

Oxford’s vice chancellor Professor Irene Tracey said: “I am absolutely thrilled that Oxford has been once again named the top university in the world.

“Eight years of leading the Times Higher Education world rankings is a testament to the impactful research we conduct that tackles some of the grand challenges facing people and the planet as well as the exceptional standards of teaching we deliver that will continue to inspire generations to come.

“I am filled with admiration for my colleagues and gratitude for all their efforts that propel this unique institution forwards.” 

According to Phil Baty, the Times Higher Education global affairs officer, no ranking has topped the list as consistently as the University of Oxford.

Performance is measured across 18 indicators which cover teaching environment, international outlook and industry-links among other areas.

Mr Baty added that a newer and richer set of research of research metrics had gathered the views of over 68,000 scholars across the world.

He also noted that there had been dramatic progress from East Asian universities, particularly from China.
