The mayor of Witney Cllr Owen Collins gave his seal of approval to the town's Oktoberfest beer festival by sinking one of the first pints.

It was the first of many poured by volunteers inside St Mary's Church to mark the start of the celebrations for the 800-year-old tradition of Witney Feast.

Visitors supped from a range of beers and lagers soaked up with German-style sausages to the accompaniment of an Oompah band.

All funds raised by the family friendly event will go to charity.

Oxford Mail: Oktoberfest in Witney

The annual festival and fair of Witney Feast celebrates the rededication of St Mary's church and is traditionally held on the two days following the first Sunday of September - the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin.

On Sunday evening a civic service was held where a new altar made from wood which has come from a Cedar of Lebanon tree that grew in the churchyard for hundreds of years was consecrated.

The bishop of Dorchester The Rt Revd Gavin Collins blessed the Mayor and the town council.
