A school in Abingdon is now fully open after further investigations showed there was no RAAC in its structure.

Oxfordshire County Council announced earlier this week that Larkmead School had closed some of its classrooms, but was working to continue face to face learning.

The school, on Faringdon Road, has now confirmed after a second site investigation by structural engineers that there is no RAAC on site.

In a letter addressed to students, parents and carers, head of the school Jonathan Dennett wrote: “The Larkmead site is in good, well-maintained condition and fully open to all pupils to all students from Monday, September 11.

“We would like to thank students and families for their adaptability and support during this brief but challenging period.

“We do understand that this has been an unsettling time for everyone. In a quickly evolving situation we have aimed to communicate clearly and to provide reassurance.

“We appreciate that it would have been helpful for parents for us to have ‘shared the working’ behind some of the decisions we made, and subsequent messages provided updates on plans to find alternative locations and bring in temporary classrooms.

“Thank you for your feedback, as the connection between school and home is key.

“We would also like to thank and recognise the Larkmead staff team for their resilience and positivity, the Vale Academy Trust for their support and guidance and Layla Moran MP for her advocacy in Parliament and directly.”
