The planned development of 60 homes on an agricultural field will turn a valued green space into a ‘concrete jungle’, concerned homeowners have claimed.

Plans to redevelop the land known as Fuller's Field on the outskirts of Wantage have been submitted to the planning authority by a developer.

Almost 100 objections have been made during the public consultation stage.

Wantage Town Council said it was concerned about the strain on infrastructure and the loss of “valued open green space for residents.”

Diana Mathew added: “One of the main reasons for people moving to Wantage and Grove has been, and still is, to escape from a built up city environment but slowly this area is becoming exactly that.

“There has been mindless construction going on this area for the past five years at least with no improvement in infrastructure - insufficient GP, dentist services, schools, cycle paths, bus services etc.

“Fuller's Field provides the much needed green buffer between the old and new developments and building on this land will make this area resemble the concrete jungles being built in Didcot for example.”

The outline planning application to develop the land has been submitted by the executors of the Stanley Thomas Pinnel Estate to Vale of White Horse District Council.

The site is surrounded to the north by the Crab Hill development, part of the larger Kingsgrove development, of which some areas are built while others are under construction or consented.

The proposed homes would be integrated with the Kingsgrove development, with links to the new and planned facilities including education, shops, and employment.

In its planning statement, the developer said “the site is a sustainable location, which has good access to services, facilities, places of employment and education, as well as public transport.”

But some believe it is one housing plan too far.

Jon Smith said: “I have not raised any objection to the Crab Hill development as I appreciate the need for additional housing. However, the application to build houses on Fuller's Field is just one application too many.”

Andrew Crawford said: “The Wantage and Grove area has seen and will continue to see massive housing growth until such time as Grove Airfield and Crab Hill are built out. Infrastructure, especially roads, health facilities, schools and the sewage system are already under excessive strain which this development would only add to.”

Alison Gillies said: “Approving this planning application would also remove yet another area for children to play and explore.

“Our family object strongly to this application and it should not be approved, but as it is probably only a matter of time, if this application is approved, there should be conditions of approval, including considerably less than 60 houses, all of which should be environmentally friendly.”
