Boris Johnson’s new neighbours have reportedly been poking fun at him by flying EU flags outside their homes.

Three blue and gold-starred flags have popped up in Brightwell-cum-Sotwell since Mr Johnson moved to the South Oxfordshire village in May.

The former Prime Minister spear-headed the ‘Vote Leave’ campaign during the 2016 Brexit referendum on leaving the European Union.

A source told The Mirror: “Some neighbours are not exactly elated Boris has moved in. His arrival has caused a kerfuffle, as the man himself might say. One villager put up the EU flag and it’s caught on among a few others, too. Let’s hope he sees the funny side.”

Mr Johnson, 59, and his wife Carrie, 35, have moved into the £3.8m Brightwell Manor, a nine-bedroom mansion with a three-sided moat.

Villagers have raised concerns since their move, with some complaining about armed security guards and drones appearing in the village.

Sue Robson, chair of the parish council, told the Oxford Mail: “The village has mixed feelings about our new resident.”

Vice chair Helen Baines added: “We’re a lovely village and we get on with our lives and you don’t want a media circus. You are probably aware that Boris only has to say one thing, and everyone will report it and with that will come attention.”

Mr Johnson resigned as an MP last month ahead of a damning Commons report which found he had lied to Parliament over Partygate.
