A loud bang and black smoke in Abingdon last night (June 19) was caused by a fire near an electrical installation, the fire service has confirmed.

Four fire engines were called to Austin Place at 8.48pm and an engineer isolated the transformer.

A large power cut was also reported by multiple people in and around the area north of the town.

Two fire engines were from Rewley Road Fire Station in Oxford and two others were from Abingdon Fire Station.

A spokesperson for Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue said: “There was a small fire on fencing around electrical installation, which was extinguished using a hose reel jet.

“Electrical transformer isolated by SEB engineers.

“The surrounding area was protected from any further fire spread by fire crews.”

Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue departed the scene at approximately 9.30pm.
