Faringdon Community College has become only the second secondary school in Oxfordshire to be rated as outstanding by education inspectors.

The college, in Fernham Road, scored the highest rating it could in its latest Ofsted report.

Cherwell School, Oxford, was the first to be rated outstanding in February this year and King's Meadow Primary School, in Bicester, also scored highly in March.

In the report, the 930 students at the mixed secondary school were described as making outstanding progress and the teaching was also praised.

The inspector noted the students' high attendance rates, the school's caring and supportive environment, and the excellent relationships between students and pupils when she visited in May.

She said the school offered an outstanding range of subjects and its engineering status was used well to broaden the curriculum.

Headteacher Dave Wilson praised the inspection report for establishing a clear direction for the school.

He said: "Clearly we are delighted with the outcome of this inspection. It reflects the efforts and determination of all our staff and students at Faringdon Community College. As a whole community we feel very proud of our achievements and also feel energised for the next stage of our development."

County councillor Michael Waine, cabinet member for school's improvement said: "It's great to see another Oxfordshire secondary school achieve outstanding from Ofsted.

"It's plain from the report that students at Faringdon really enjoy their lessons and this is shown in the high levels of attendance.

"My congratulations go to David Wilson and his team for their very real commitment to the learning of the students at the college."
