A consultation has opened on whether to introduce a 20mph speed limit throughout Chipping Norton.

Oxfordshire County Council is proposing to incorporate the existing 20mph within the town centre and replacing the majority of the existing 30mph speed limits in the process.

30mph speed limits on the A44 Worcester Road, A361 Burford Road, and B4026 Charlbury Road will remain in place as council officers have taken the current road environment and traffic usage into account.

Residents are being asked their views on the proposals which were put forward following road safety concerns raised by Chipping Norton Town Council.

The council is rolling out 20mph areas as a replacement for 30mph areas where there is local support in a three-year £8million scheme.

It is intended to improve road safety and reduce congestion and air pollution.

The council said the introduction of 20mph in its 2021/2022 pilot areas has already reduced speeds by up to 4mph.

"This has really benefitted the local communities and it will help to reduce the frequency and severity of accidents," it said.

Responses should be completed and returned by 5pm on Friday 30 June 2023.

The county council will review them and, if objections are received, prepare a report to be presented to the Cabinet Member for Highway Management Andrew Gant at a meeting scheduled for later in 2023.

This will be public meeting at which members of the public may apply to speak.

The agenda and reports will be made available on the Oxfordshire County Council website about a week before the meeting.
