Police officers in Banbury have become the first to be issued with "bodycams" they can wear on their chest.

Thames Valley Police has 120 of the mini cameras, paid for with a Home Office grant and funding from Crime and Disorder Partnerships in the region, and six police officers in Banbury took the equipment out on the streets for the first time on Friday, a spokesman said today.

The equipment is made up of a compact, lightweight digital camera, which transmits images to a small video recorder worn on the officer's belt.

Police Community Support Officers and response officers will wear the cameras both as a deterrent and to gather evidence.
