This weekend's closure of the northbound A34 "cannot be the same as it was last time", said an MP.

The A34 will be closed northbound between the Botley and Peartree Interchanges from 9pm tonight (Friday June 9) until 6am on Monday (June 12).

It is the third weekend of closures while National Highways carries out essential concrete repairs to the viaduct which carries the A34 over the River Thames near Wolvercote.

Motorists have been ignoring diversion signs, causing jams in Wolvercote, trapping residents in their homes and putting dangerous levels of weight on historic Godstow Bridge.

Abingdon and Oxford West MP Layla Moran described the closure as "infuriating".

She said: "Everyone feels it and I'm personally affected like many others. We've just got to plan ahead."

Oxford Mail: Drivers have ignored diversion signs and caused chaos in Wolvercote

The disruption was made worse by delays on Botley Road which is closed until the end of October for upgrade works to Oxford rail station.

She told Radio Oxford: "It's worth bearing in mind no here locally actually can stop this. This is National Highways work. I've written to them a number of times. We wrote to them before the last southbound closure. We wrote to them as soon as we started to see issues in Wolvercote. I went myself and tried to sort of inspect it.

"I think there was a frustration that for those closures we had asked for marshals at some of the diversion points. That wasn't provided by National Highways and that was something they could have done better. So ahead of the northbound closure we have written to them.

"We've said, this cannot be the same as it was last time."

Traffic must not travel through Seacourt Lane from south of the Wytham turn from the A34 northbound to the A420 Botley junction.

A fully signed diversion will be in place via Eastern Bypass Road, A40 and A44 between the Peartree and Hinksey Hill Interchanges, it said.

Greg Stone, National Highways route manager, said: "There's never a good time to close a busy road like the A34, and we understand the impact our closures are having on Wolvercote residents.

"We are currently ahead of schedule and we’ve completed the southbound work a week early.

"The northbound closures this weekend should not affect Wolvercote village. However, we urge motorists to follow the official diversion which has been chosen as it can cope with the volumes of traffic being diverted off the A34.

"We are also reviewing our signage. We will place additional signs on the Botley roundabout to encourage drivers to follow the official diversion route and hopefully reducing the impact on the surrounding area."
