HUNDREDS of renewable energy lovers embraced wind technology in an unusual world record attempt in Watchfield, near Faringdon.

Nearly 400 people set a record for the biggest turbine hug at the Westmill Windfarm on Saturday.

The event was the culmination of Faringdon Ecoweek.

Windfarm owner Adam Twine said: "We are making new firsts all the time here. at Westmill. The wind was blowing so it was a good day for a hug. The turbines deserved it as they had been creating clean energy all day and will continue to do so.

"This project demonstrates that people can come together to make a change."

The farm is owned by a co-operative, the chairman of which is Mark Luntley, the former finance chief of Oxford City Council.

The event was especially meaningful because the co-operative recently discovered the turbines had been creating ten per cent more energy than first predicted.
