Plans to introduce a 20mph speed limit in Wantage will go to consultation ‘shortly’, according to Oxfordshire County Council.

The consultation will let residents have their say on the potential speed measures – although the council said it was ‘not possible to give a timescale’ when it would be held.

The plans are part of the council’s three-year scheme to introduce 20mph speeds as the new 30mph for communities where there is local support.

Speed reductions have already been approved in villages near Wantage, including West Challow West Hanney, and East Hanney, where two bus companies unsuccessfully objected to the plans.

In early April, the 20mph consultation in Wantage briefly went live, but was suspended by the council almost immediately.

At the time, a council spokesman said: “The Wantage proposal is currently on hold while the proposed design is reviewed to ensure it meets the needs of all highway users.

“Oxfordshire County Council will be recommencing the consultation in the very near future.”

Now, two months later, the council said the plans have been updated.

A spokesman said: “The Wantage plans have been updated and are expected to go out to consultation shortly, although it is not possible to give a timescale at this stage.”

Wantage Town Council requested the 20mph restrictions early last year and held its own consultation on the plans.

A statement at the time said: “It is hoped by reducing the speed limit on roads that the traffic will flow more steadily, there will be less accidents and it will give more people confidence to cycle and walk.

“It is also hoped that this will help make the town safer, easier to navigate and as a result more attractive and friendly.”
