A plane seen flying low over Oxford on Wednesday night (May 31) making ‘very unusual’ sound was not in distress, the airport has confirmed.

The aircraft circled several times in the area to the west of Oxford, turning around near Kidlington.

This raised concerns among members of the public.

One eyewitness said: “I am ex RAF and am familiar with the kind of sounds that aircraft from Brize Norton, Bicester and Kidlington make when flying low over Oxford.

“However, last night about 8pm, I heard what sounded like a high-performance propeller driven plane flying very low over Summertown.

“It sounded very unusual - and very low.

"I wasn’t quick enough to get outside to catch a glimpse of the aircraft, but I heard it make two passes over Summertown, and then another to the west of Summertown within the space of half an hour or so.”

Another witness added: “The plane flew over the house low twice. Looks like the landing gear is damaged and bent on the front.”

Oxford Mail:

But London Oxford Airport today (June 3) confirmed that the sighting was nothing to be concerned about.

In a message to Oxford resident, Jeff Slade which he shared on Twitter, a spokesperson said: “The aircraft was conducting visual circuits and was testing its ‘RAT’ Ram Air Turbine which is the cause of the loud noise!

“It wasn’t in distress.”
