Police have confirmed that the locomotive which collided with a car at a level crossing in Kidlington this morning (May 18) was a passenger train.

The incident occurred at the Sandy Lane crossing just before 8am.

The train is currently being taken to Banbury where the passengers will be able to get off.

Two people in the car were taken to hospital for checks after the crash.

They did not sustain any serious injuries.

Emergency services remain on scene and an investigation is being carried out as to how the crash occurred.

The incident forced the train line between Oxford and Banbury to close which has caused severe distruption to travellers.

Commuters are facing delays of up to 60 minutes.

Great Western Railway initially said distruption would last until 10am but this has since been extended to 1pm.
