A baby born on Star Wars Day has been named Obie, says his grandmother.

And this is in spite of the fact his mother has never seen the films.

Dawn Stevens’ grandson was born at the JR on May the Fourth last year.

She says her 27-year-old daughter named him after Obi-Wan Kenobi from the epic space franchise even though she was not exactly a Star Wars buff.

She said: “She had no idea, she’d never seen the film. But when he was born my husband said, you realise what day it is, don’t you? They said, you’re joking, what a coincidence.”

And Mrs Stevens has no regrets that they did not choose a more normal down-to-Earth name.

She said: “I’ve only seen bits of the film myself but I think it’s a great name. In fact she'd picked it out before when she saw it on Tik Tok.”

Yesterday a woman took to Reddit to ask advice as her husband was trying to convince her to name their son after Darth Vader.

She said their first son was called Rowan after the riders in Lord of The Rings.

She said: "We have a girl's name picked out, we are torn on boys names.

"My husband loves the name Anakin.

"I don't mind the name itself, it's what it's connected to that bothers me. I feel like our poor kid would go through his whole life hearing how he is named after Darth Vader.

"He just really likes the sound of the name. I don't know what to do here.".

The responses included: "Anakin, a boy nick named Ani? Don't do it. I'm a massive Star Wars fan and I think it's a terrible name for a kid.

"What about Luke instead, not super common yet still Star Wars related."
