Celebrations and events will be staged across Bicester this weekend to mark the Coronation of King Charles III.

Garden parties, street parties and picnics will mark the King’s Coronation in Bicester, with events led by the town council, care homes and hotels.

The Coronation celebrations will begin on Saturday at Garth Park, where the town council will be hosting a large picnic with a number of activities and entertainment alongside the live screening of the Coronation.

A spokesperson for Bicester Town Council said: “Bring a picnic and join us to celebrate such a monumental event.

“Entry to the event is free and open to all. Savoir Fare, the on-site cafe, will be open throughout the day.”

The event will begin at 11am.

On Sunday, from 1pm to 5pm, Bicester hotel Golf and Spa will be hosting a street party by one of its lakes.

A spokesperson for the hotel said: “There will be a BBQ, ice cream and cake, and an outside bar with plenty of fun and games for all the family.”

Also taking place on Sunday, Launton Grange Care Home is hosting a garden party on its premises.

A spokesperson for the care home said: “We’ll have music, a bouncy castle, face painting, homemade refreshments, games and more. Everyone is welcome.”

The event will run from 12pm until 3pm.

Garth Park also made the stage for the proclamation ceremony of King Charles III, which was attended by members of the council, staff, local dignitaries and members of the public.

So many guests turned up on the day that around 50 people could not fit into the town council headquarters, and instead stood outside listening to the proclamation being read on large speakers.

The accession proclamation was read by Mayor Alex Thrupp in the council chamber, among guests including Deputy Lieutenant Mr Robert Buckeldee, delegates from the Royal British Legion and Lieutenant Colonel Alex Atherton.

The coronation was the first in the council’s series of summer events, which include family fun day in association with Armed Forces Day, Bicester food festival, family sports day and a number of live music events.

Buckingham Palace announced in October last year that King Charles will be crowned at Westminster Abbey on Saturday, May 6.

The Queen Consort will be crowned alongside him. The last time a Queen Consort was crowned was on May 12, 1937, when the coronation of George VI and Queen Elizabeth was held in the Abbey.

The ceremony will be conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Reverend Justin Welby.
