A pizza restaurant in an historic shopping arcade could be getting a new look.

Oxford's Pizza Express has applied to the city council for planning permission to upgrade the signage and to add a menu box at the restaurant at 7 Golden Cross off Cornmarket Street.

Pictures show the grand Grade II-listed building, in a conservation area, which is currently pink painted white at the top with the company logo next to an upstairs window.

The ground floor exterior is painted black with the gold-lettered sign against a black background.

Images show window boxes and orange awnings.

Golden Cross has more than 15 retail units and provides one of the entrances to the historic Covered Market.

A heritage statement accompanying the application says the signage "is like for like and where possible all existing fixtures and fittings will be re-used".

Technical Signs state: "Because the building is being upgraded with signage that already exists and has been for a number of years, we foresee no detrimental impact on the building with regards to our undertaking the above works.

"The signage bodes well with the setting of the building and conservation area.

"The signage conforms to the Conservation area appraisal and is in line Oxford’s Shopfront Advertising Guidelines."
