An investigation into a sinkhole in Oxfordshire is 'inconclusive' as the road closure is set to continue.

Parish councillors first noticed a dip on Manor Road in South Hinksey and discussed the issues during the parish council meeting on Monday (April 3).

It was then Oxfordshire County Council on Tuesday (April 4) after the dip collapsed into the hole beneath.

The road was immediately closed with investigation work taking place this morning to identify the cause.

After “inconclusive” results the road will remain closed as council workers intend to excavate further to repair the sinkhole.

It is hoped the road will reopen tomorrow afternoon.

An Oxfordshire County Council spokesperson said: “Oxfordshire County Council was made aware of this sinkhole just after 4pm on Tuesday (4 April).

“The hole was barriered off and an immediate road closure put into place to protect member members of public.

“We were on site early this morning to carry out urgent investigation works to identify the cause.

“Historically we’ve had similar issues in this area where collapses have occurred in utility services.

“Today’s investigation has so far proved inconclusive. It’s our intention to excavate down further and our principal contractor will complete the repairs to this void hopefully by tomorrow afternoon (Thursday) so that the road can be reopened to the public.

“We would like to apologise for any inconvenience or disruption this may have caused.”

Councillor Emily Smith urged motorists, cyclists and pedestrians to take care whilst travelling in the area.

She said: "This part of South Hinksey regularly floods and parts of the village were underwater last Friday night.

"I’m aware of sinkholes in the area in the past but I have never come across one this big.

"The heavy rain last night once again highlighted the limits of Thames Water's ageing infrastructure around my ward and I suspect the heavy rain was the reason for the sinkhole appearing.

"Parish councillors mentioned a dip in the road on Monday night during the parish council meeting, and it seems that on Tuesday the road surface just collapsed into the hole beneath.

"Clearly it is not safe to drive along Manor Road and I would urge cyclists and pedestrians to take care until Highways have made it safe.”
