Police have confirmed tonight that no detainees have escaped from Campsfield immigration removal centre but one has been hurt.

About 50 police and another 100 prison staff in riot gear are positioned outside the controversial centre on the outskirts of Kidlington after several fires broke out.

One detainee has been treated for smoke inhalation.

Disturbances broke out at the controversial centre - which holds up to 200 men - just before 2pm today.

A UK Border Agency spokesman said: "We can confirm a disturbance in one block.

The prison service and police have assisted the UK Border agency by securing the perimeter, which has not been breached.

"GEO, who run the site, have asked us for assistance and a number of specially trained prison officers have been sent to Campsfield."

A source said no-one had been seriously hurt although one person needed treatment for smoke inhalation.

The fires were believed to be under control and it was expected firefighters would soon be stood down.

He added: "I can't say it is finished. It seems to be getting under control."

There is a small amount of damage in one block but it was not enough to force detainees to be moved.

However the source said a decision would still have to be made whether to move people out of the block for other security reasons.

Police spokesman Rachel McQuilliam said: "Officers are supporting the UK Border Agency and the prison service in securing the perimeter of the unit.

"Around 50 officers are involved, including police dog handlers and the Force helicopter.

"There are no reports of escapees."

GEO, the private firm which runs Campsfield, had to call in help from police and the Home Office - which has specially trained officers from what is called a Tornado squad - when the trouble flared.
