A drinker who asked a cop ‘are you going to nick me then?’ was arrested – after he aimed a slap at a police officer.

Stephen Rushmer was found by the two constables at the top of Turl Street on Saturday, March 25.

The police had been called after reports that the 58-year-old was ‘verbally abusive’ in The White Horse pub in Broad Street.

The two constables recognised Rushmer. He squared up to one of the officers, demanding: “Are you going to nick me, then?”

He walked towards the police officer ‘giving him the two fingers while telling him to f*** off’, Oxford Magistrates’ Court heard.

The officer pushed the defendant’s hand down. But Rushmer aimed a slap at the officer, hitting him in the forearm.

Interviewed by the police, he admitted he was ‘blackout drunk’, had no memory of the incident and was sorry if he had assaulted anyone.

Appearing before the magistrates on Monday morning (March 27), Rushmer, of North Way, Oxford, pleaded guilty to assaulting an emergency worker.

Phil Kovaritakis, mitigating, said his client recognised he had a problem with alcohol binges. He was due to start a residential rehabilitation programme this week.

After a probation officer confirmed that the rehab stint was to start on Wednesday, District Judge Kamlesh Rana deferred sentence until July 17.
