A motion to improve health facilities in Didcot that are currently “failing residents” has been approved by South Oxfordshire District Council.

Didcot town council leader Mocky Khan proposed the motion at a full meeting of the district council on Tuesday, March 14.

In the motion, he said: “I am concerned that health facilities in Didcot are not keeping pace with the growth of population in the town and surrounding villages.

“This is leaving existing health care facilities under unsustainable pressure. Residents and healthcare professionals alike are feeling the strain.

“This situation has developed over many years and many residents now feel that their needs are being ignored by those who make key health decisions. We believe that this needs to change.”

Cllr Khan described a period in December 2022 when residents were unable to sign up to any of the town’s GP surgeries because none had capacity for new patients.

He added that the Great Western Park development had promised a health centre which has still not been delivered.

The acceptance of Cllr Khan’s motion means that the district council has accepted the need for better health services in Didcot.

This includes the need for a health centre and GP hub for Great Western Park, a well-resourced Minor Injuries Unit or similar, more NHS dental facilities, and increased resources to support mental health.

It also means the district council will share its concerns with other relevant bodies.
