A climate emergency group held a celebratory event as their town council extended the licence agreement of their headquarters.

Abingdon Town Council has renewed the licence of the One Planet Abingdon Climate Emergency Centre (OPACEC), allowing the volunteer group to operate for another five years, at no charge, from the basement of Abingdon Museum.

A spokesperson for OPACEC said the licence renewal is a massive achievement and validation of the extensive work that is being undertaken.

They added that with 100 volunteers on the book, there is a momentum that is building as the town begins to understand the responsibilities everyone has in the climate and ecological emergency.

Deputy Lieutenant Felicity Dick said: “It is wonderful to be able to celebrate with One Planet Abingdon; the work they are doing is inspirational. “We all know the King is very engaged in the environment and the climate emergency and in my position here today I represent the monarchy.

“We all have a responsibility to act locally, and this then impacts positively on the community and is felt globally.

Councillor Gabby Barody said: “What a fantastic event and what an achievement. Delighted to be involved and looking forward to our mission in growing together, and what is possible now and over the next five years.”

OPACEC collaborates with many organisation, and engages with local schools, communities and people.
