Villagers are in uproar after their concerns about a "hazardous" junction on the A41 have gone unanswered by the council.

Residents of Blackthorn near Bicester are alarmed that the junction between the A41 and Lower Road is becoming "untenable" due to the volume of traffic that uses it.

The county council has said this site has already been identified for further investigation.

But roadworks currently being carried out on Ploughley Road are causing more drivers to use the junction in Blackthorn village.

One concerned woman living nearby, who did not wish to be named, said: “There is a danger that we now have in the village because Highways haven’t put anything in place to alleviate the traffic.

Oxford Mail:

“This is exactly what we knew would happen, which is hundreds of vehicles coming through our village in the rush hours times.

“In the past they have installed temporary traffic lights on occasions when they knew that there would be more traffic.

“But for the past eight months they just haven’t done it.

Oxford Mail:

"No matter how much we have asked for something to be done it just hasn’t happened.”

Some villagers fear it is only a matter of time before there is a fatal crash at the location.

The resident continued: “The consequence is that since just before Christmas there have been four or five pretty serious accidents at the end here.

Oxford Mail:

“Just last week a car ended up in a ditch at the junction.

“Our house looks out over the junction so we can hear the impact of these accidents.

“You hardly dare look out and within minutes there are emergency vehicles again.

“I’ve sent four or five emails to several different people, and I very rarely get a response.”

Villagers have called on the council to install temporary traffic lights at the junction in Blackthorn to reduce the number of accidents that occur there.

They have also suggested the painting of visible road markings on the area such as ‘slow’ and a reduced speed limit.

Another concern Blackthorn residents have raised is the impact that increased volumes of traffic is having on the village.

The resident added: “Cars come flying through Blackthorn and we and lots of other residents enjoy walking around Blackthorn.

“Motorists are being very aggressive towards us, as far as driving at us, at speed to try and force us off the road.

“We are also having to put up with rude gestures frequently.

Oxford Mail:

“It is quite unfathomable that people are doing what they are doing towards pedestrians.”

A council spokesman said: “The county council takes the safety of our network seriously and prioritises any improvement work based on incidents and potential future issues.

“This  site has already been identified for further investigation as part of our commitment to Vison Zero.”
