It is difficult to understand why city councillor Ed Turner (Oxford Mail, June 3) imagines the proposed development at Weston-on-the-Green might relieve congestion on the A34.

Common sense suggests that a new town the size of Bicester will inevitably increase traffic on the already congested A34, not decrease it.

Furthermore, the enhanced rail service he mentions has been under consideration for several years, long before the new town was ever proposed.

The new town might add to the profitability of the service, but the rail improvements are a realistic prospect, regardless of whether the new town is built.

I can understand why Oxford City Council is sympathetic to new housing. The city has a chronic shortage of housing.

However, to minimise commuting, any new development needs to be close to the major employment centres south of Oxford.

Any major development north of the city will inevitably become a dormitory town, generating high levels of commuter traffic.

A new town in this location cannot properly be described as eco-friendly.
