A councillor has been criticised for an outspoken tweet on reforms by the Church of England regarding gendered language.

Kevin Bulmer, Conservative county councillor for the Goring division, wrote: “Wonder when those woke muppets at the CofE will change ‘my kingdom come’ to ‘my safe space come’, t***s.”

Oxford Mail:

The public comment has left the councillor - who has previously been chairman of Goring Parish Council - open to criticism.

Liberal Democrat county council leader Liz Leffman said: “When I learnt about the tweet I was pretty disgusted.

“It had been picked up by some of our members who as members of the Church of England were offended by the content and under the Equalities Act, religion is a protected right.

“I don’t think it is appropriate for a councillor to make those kinds of comments, particularly on Twitter.”

Bulmer’s tweet came following news that bishops would debate changes to religious language such as the use of the pronouns he/him when referring to God at the church parliament in the spring.

A spokesman for the Church of England said: “This is nothing new.

“Christians have recognised since ancient times that God is neither male nor female.

“A question was asked at Synod about alternative language not abolishing existing language.

"So, it would simply be wrong to say that the Church of England is considering stopping using any particular terms for God.

“There are also absolutely no plans to abolish or substantially revise currently authorized liturgies and no such changes could be made without extensive legislation.”
