An Oxfordshire pub has been named in the 2023 list of Estrella Damm Top 50 Gastropubs.

The Bell Inn, Langford near Burford was ranked number 37 after rankings were compiled using hundreds of votes from food critics and writers, gastropub chefs and other food influencers.

The pub was reopened in December 2017 by Peter Creed and Tom Noest, who are both from the Cotswolds, and offers a British menu.

In 2018, the pub was crowned the winner of the central region in The Sunday Times Best Places to Stay guide.

There is a bar area, a separate restaurant with an open fire and a pizza oven, as well as a large beer garden overlooking the open countryside and eight renovated rooms for guests to stay in.

The Estrella Damm awards said: "The venue offers a modern country pub feel, showcasing the duo’s love for a hearty, classic British menu with the addition of wood-fired dishes and an extensive drinks menu, with great hospitality and ambience also a top priority.

"Seasonal menus are ever-changing, sourced from local game dealers, farmers, butchers and fishmongers.

"Showcasing the best ingredients are dishes such as venison faggots, Barrington partridge, pigs head scrumpet and salt pig saucisson.

"Other dishes have included salted anchovy and chive flatbread; garlic, parsley, shallots and bone marrow flatbread; and Cotswold IPA rarebit with soldiers and pickles for starters.

"Mains have included calves liver, mash, onion gravy and sage; chicken Milanese with garlic, green beans and parmesan; and aubergine caponata with burrata and chilli.

"The pub also serves a good pizza and steak offering, with all dishes, including the steak, very reasonably priced. A good range of sides are also available to select."

The awards list also ranked pubs from 51 to 100 with a second Oxfordshire pub making the list.

The Wild Rabbit in Kingham was at number 72. It was recently named Michelin Pub of the Year 2015 in the edition of Michelin Eating Out Guide, and has also received three Rosettes from AA.

The Estrella Damm awards described the pub by saying: "The restaurant marries traditional British country-dining with more modern, urban touches.

"The kitchen is open so diners can see for themselves how food is prepared, for example, while the charcuterie counter has become a focal point.

"Additionally, the atmospheric private dining room, ‘The Chicken Shed’ seats up to 20 and has its own wood burning oven and kitchen for a private chef.

"The traditional pub bar offers an eclectic mix of reasonably priced beers from artisan breweries alongside some more household names.

"Bar food can also be ordered from blackboards, which are tweaked daily, as well as the restaurant menu."
