RAIL passengers are facing lengthy weekend delays after a landslide caused a train to crash into rubble in Oxfordshire.

Great Western Railway (GWR) has cancelled trains between Oxford and Worcester Shrub Hill with all lines remaining blocked.

It is understood the train hit the obstruction near Hanborough, West Oxfordshire, at around 9pm yesterday.

A retaining brick wall collapsed following the landslide, with a train damaged after hitting the rubble.

No further details have yet been released on the extent of the damage caused by the landslide or if there were any injuries at the time of the collision.

All services running through those stations have been cancelled or delayed and disruption is expected until the end of the day.

Travel advice

As of 9.30am, GWR confirmed the following advice to weekend rail users:

  • Train services between Oxford and Worcester Shrub Hill may be cancelled or revised
  • Kingham, Shipton, Ascott-Under-Wychwood, Charlbury and Hanborough will not be served

Customer advice

A GWR statement said: “We have requested multiple coaches to shuttle between Worcester and Oxford, but we are still waiting for confirmation from suppliers. As soon as we have more information we will publish it.”

GWR tickets can be used on CrossCountry trains between Reading, Oxford, and Birmingham and on Chiltern Railways trains between Birmingham Moor Street and London Marylebone.

Your GWR ticket can also be used on Avanti West Coast trains between Birmingham New Street and London Euston and on West Midlands Railway trains between Hereford, Great Malvern, Worcester, and Birmingham.
