A man was curious as to why he was being inconvenienced when he found he could not use the public toilets due to the latest regulations on Covid.

An Oxford City Council Parks and Open Spaces notice gaffer taped to the door of the toilets in South Parade read: "In light of recent government guidance on Covid 19 we regret to inform that this toilet will remain closed until further notice."

Dr Mike Fraser spotted the notice yesterday.

He said: "The toilets were closed last Sunday also but without any notice. I do not believe the Covid-19 explanation. Someone probably decided any old closure sign would do.

"However, public need toilets, so an honest explanation would be nice."

He tweeted Oxford City Council: "This notice has appeared in the last seven days. Can you clarify to what 'recent government guidance on Covid-19' you are referring that requires the closure of a public toilet?"

A council spokesperson has now confirmed the sign had been put up in error.

"The toilets had to be closed due to vandalism," he said. "An incorrect closure sign was used and it will now be replaced.

"ODS will undertake repairs to the facility with a view to reopening it as soon as possible."
