A midwife who received a fine for driving through a bus gate found her car clamped and must pay £400 to bailiffs in a mix-up over her details.

Oxfordshire County Council said the fine was issued correctly and following the statutory process.

However, the midwife said the letters were never received as they were sent to a wrong address.

She has admitted the DVLA details were incorrect.

The woman was working as a maternity support worker based at Florence Park on Cornwallis Road when a bus gate was installed.

She believes she originally got the fine when she first started her job last May.

She said: "I was unaware of this. It turns out only buses can go through.

"Fast forward eight months and I go outside to my car where I live in Bicester only to find it is clamped.

"A notice on the windscreen informs me that bailiffs have clamped it and will be taking the car away if I do not pay £400 to them straight away.

"After doing some investigating it turns out that I was fined for going through. I had not received any letters to inform me of this fine.

"They had been going to the wrong house."

The midwife said the DVLA confirmed to her that this was the information they were given by the individual she purchased the car from.

However, she said she wanted her experience to serve as a warning to others.

She said: "The moral of the story is that LTNs and bus gates - this one in particular - are causing problems for lots of people, particularly the midwife and maternity workers that work in the community, adding more travel time and costs in fuel.

"I no longer do this job due these costs. Having a bailiff try to take my car away was a horrible experience."

A council spokesman said the fine was checked with the parking enforcement team and the signage was clear.

He said: "Our records show that signage was in position at the time that the car passed through the bus gate on Cornwallis Road.

"Letters were sent to the address on DVLA records following the statutory process – without any response.

"Our parking enforcement team is happy to discuss with the vehicle owner if they would like to contact them."

A DVLA spokesperson said it is only a record-keeper and can not comment due to data protection laws.
