A major road linking busy destinations across Oxfordshire will be partly closed overnight for seven weeks.

The A34, which is notorious for traffic incidents, will be closed northbound near Abindgon while sections of the metal safety barrier are replaced.

The road will be closed northbound from Milton Interchange (A4130) to the A4183 Oxford Road entry slip on weeknights from 9pm to 6am from Monday January 30.

During the day and at weekends there will be narrow lanes and a 50mph speed limit.

Highways England advised drivers to "please take extra care".

"We'll be working overnight on the grass verge next to the carriageway and will also be clearing some overgrown vegetation to improve safety and visibility," it said.

Drivers travelling northbound will be diverted and will leave the A34 at Milton Interchange and follow the A4130 towards Wallingford.

They will then take the A4074 to join the A243 at Heyford Hill Roundabout and Bypass Road to Hinksey Hill Interchange.
