The final series of Inspector Morse spin-off drama Endeavour is expected to start on ITV next month.

It was the end of an era in August when Shaun Evans, who plays a young Inspector Morse, and Roger Allam, who plays DI Fred Thursday, filmed their last ever scenes in Oxford.

Film crews were at Parson's Pleasure, St John's Street and Turl Street, where Shaun Evans was seen near a joke shop.

ITV has confirmed that Endeavour series 9 will be the last series but it has not yet revealed the precise dates for the new episodes.

The first of three final episodes is expected at the end of February.

Oxford Mail:

According to the website britishperioddramas.com the final season’s opening episode is set in the spring of 1972, and directed by Shaun Evans.

The synopsis for the story reads: "Two unexplained deaths turn up ties to the Oxford Concert Orchestra, while a body discovered in a derelict warehouse stokes fears that ‘London business’ has yet again found its way to Oxford.

“Thursday and Endeavour’s investigation unearths some unsettling connections to cases the duo believed were well and truly behind them.”

The long-running Morse franchise is based on the novels of Colin Dexter, and the Endeavour series follows the Inspector Morse series and the Lewis series.

In a statement, ITV said earlier: "After 10 phenomenally successful years, producers Mammoth Screen, and screenwriter Russell Lewis, Shaun Evans and Roger Allam have mutually decided to bring the internationally renowned Endeavour to a close, and the series currently filming in Oxford will be the last.

Oxford Mail:

"ITV’s drama commissioning team respectfully accepts this creative decision and would like to extend heartfelt thanks to everyone associated with Endeavour who have made the drama such a well loved part of the UK’s drama landscape.

"ITV would particularly like to thank Damien Timmer, Russell Lewis, Shaun Evans and Roger Allam who have created television history following in the footsteps of Morse’s acclaimed creator, the late, great, Colin Dexter and the much missed John Thaw."

Since filming began for ITV’s Inspector Morse episodes in the late 1980s, film crews for Inspector Morse, Lewis and Endeavour have been a familiar sight on the streets of Oxford.

Executive producer Damien Timmer said on behalf of producers, Mammoth Screen earlier: "Endeavour has been a real labour of love for all of us, and we salute Russell Lewis for his extraordinary achievement in chronicling Endeavour Morse’s coming of age across 72 hours of TV.

"Russell always knew where he wanted the series to end, and that Remorseful Day is nearly upon us!

"We’d like to thank Shaun and Roger and all the other members of the Endeavour family on and off screen, and to the show’s fans both in the UK and abroad."
