Two of Oxford's leading independent school are set to launch a joint bus service to reduce the number of car journeys by parents.

Headington School and Magdalen College School have announced plans for a new, joint bus partnership, operational from September 2023.

The aim is to ensure that pupils at both schools have access to a safe, reliable and affordable bus network "while furthering our aim to become more sustainable schools by reducing the number of journeys made by private vehicles", said an MCS spokesperson.

The plan is to operate a network of 12 routes with the possibility of providing additional, later buses on some routes to allow greater access to extracurricular activities.

A spokesperson for MCS said: "We anticipate this would encourage more parents to make use of the buses, reducing the number of car journeys required."

The schools have collaborated with Oxfordshire County Council and coach operators Horseman, Heyfordian and Pearces have agreed to service the routes.

Caroline Jordan, Headmistress at Headington School, said: “Reducing our impact on the environment is hugely important for us, along with working closely and sympathetically with our neighbours within the city of Oxford and beyond.

"We believe this new partnership will make it easier for parents to choose sustainable travel options and we will continue to do everything we can to make car-free journeys a viable option to our families.”

Helen Pike, Master, Magdalen College School, added: “I am delighted to announce the launch of this exciting new partnership, which will enable pupils who cannot currently walk, cycle or take public transport to school to travel by coach.

"Keenly aware that many parents and pupils depend on access to a safe and reliable bus network, we have worked closely with Headington School, Oxford City Council and other local partners to create an innovative joint partnership that reduces our environment impact as part of our core mission to become a more sustainable school."
