Mamma Mia pizzeria is moving next door after 42 years in its current home on South Parade in Summertown.

The award-winning restaurant, which opened in 1981, is switching next door to slightly larger premises that will offer improved facilities for guests and staff alike, and a few more tables and chairs.

Guests may not notice much has changed beyond the slightly longer walk to the front door though, with the team at Mamma Mia keen to ensure the consistency, authenticity and casual atmosphere they are famed for is maintained in the new building.

Owner Jon Ellse said: "We’ve worked to create a very familiar atmosphere in our new home. Fundamentally, little has changed.

"We have the same menus, tables, décor and, of course, our superb team of kitchen and front-of-house staff. We're incredibly excited for the move and being able to offer a slightly fresher take on Mamma Mia, but we'll challenge our regulars to spot the difference. Here’s to the next 40 plus years!"

Oxford Mail:

The new Mamma Mia Summertown - a move from 8 to 9 South Parade - will open from 5pm tonight.

First opened in Summertown in 1981, Mamma Mia pizzeria has been an Oxford institution for over 40 years.

It combines traditional, authentic recipes, fabulous imported Italian ingredients and a relaxed, family friendly atmosphere to bring a little bit of Naples to Oxford.

The company's second restaurant was opened in Jericho in 2009, proving just as popular as the original offering pizza and pasta.

Mamma Mia in Summertown is rated 4.5 out of 5 on reviews site Tripadvisor and ranked second best Italian restaurant in Oxford on the site.

One diner who visited recently wrote: "We visited on New Year’s Eve to celebrate a birthday. We are not local, so we booked Mamma Mias after looking at the internet recommendations. We loved it.

"It’s a popular place so I am glad we booked!

"The menu is perhaps not quite as varied or as large as some major chain Italian restaurants, but there are definitely options to chose from.

"The starters were nice (the garlic bread is amazing, but filling - get one to share!) and the pizzas are authentic Italian style.

Oxford Mail:

"Service was good and there was no feeling of being rushed out the door. We would recommend it and we would go back again!"

Another reviewer gave Mamma Mia a five-star review.

The customer wrote: "We had a really lovely family lunch celebrating a twixmas birthday. The menu suited everyone from my 14-year-old nephew to my 84-year-old coeliac mother-in-law.

"The atmosphere was buzzing as the restaurant was full, making the whole experience feel cosy and connected. The waiters worked hard non-stop and were helpful and efficient, thanking us for coming as we arrived, and offering charming prompt service throughout the meal.

Oxford Mail:

"The food was delicious too. We ordered enough garlic bread to sink a battleship and that went down a treat - there was no skimping on the garlic - and the pizzas were excellent, as was the pasta and the aubergine melanzane."
