Like ‘walking around an open air museum’ – albeit the traffic is ‘horrific’.

That, at least, is the view of Oxford from the United States.

The 1,100-year-old city has been chosen by website Nomads Nation as the fifth coolest place in the UK for ‘digital nomads’ to live.

The term ‘digital nomad’ was coined in the 1990s to describe those who, thanks to computer technology and the expansion of the internet, were able to work anywhere around the globe.

The attraction of the lifestyle has grown since the Covid-19 pandemic, as people discovered they did not necessarily need to work from an office.

Nomads Nation, an advice website for IT-enabled itinerants, has chosen the top 10 places in the UK for such digital nomads to base themselves.

Oxford chalked fifth place, above Manchester but pipped to the top spot by London, Portsmouth, Brighton and Edinburgh.

The website authors wrote of Oxford: “This city, and its university, are steeped in history and for many people going about your day to day business will be like walking around an open-air museum.

“Seriously charming and historical stuff going on here, guys.”

And while being ‘beautiful’ and having ‘literally so much heritage’ were ranked among Oxford’s charms, its cons include the expense of living in the city and the fact that ‘driving in and around Oxford is horrific’.
