COMMUTERS are reminded to expect delays today (Wednesday, December 14) due to the ongoing railway strikes.

Network Rail has warned people this morning that due to the industrial action, there will be significantly reduced train services across the railway until Sunday, January 8.

It said: “Trains will be busier and likely to start later and finish earlier, and there will be no services at all in some places.”

Thousands of members of the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT), Transport Salaried Staffs Association (TSSA) and Unite are set to to launch a series of strikes in the next few weeks which will cripple services.

Union leaders are demanding better working conditions and pay increases to keep up with inflation, which is rising rapidly as the cost-of-living crisis continues.

Postal workers are also striking today after walking out on Friday (December 9) in the first of a new wave of strikes called by the Communication Workers Union (CWU).

They are manning picket lines today and tomorrow as well as Friday, December 23 and Christmas Eve.

Also expected to strike tomorrow are Royal College of Nursing (RCN) members employed at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust and Oxford Community Health for the first time in the union's history.
