An Oxford hotel has been named one of the most plush in the country by a team of industry experts.

Voco Oxford Thames hotel has been named Most Luxurious Riverside Hotel 2023 by a top travel magazine.

The hotel at Sandford-on-Thames has a riverside setting just a short walk from the Kassam Stadium.

It sits in 30 acres of grounds and many of its rooms and suites have views over the Thames.

The award from LUXLife comes as the hotel is about to open its newly refurbished Napiers Restaurant with new branding and a new menu.

The house and its lands have been owned by notable religious figures, lords, and even kings throughout the centuries before transforming into a hotel.

The building has a history dating back to the Middle Ages and was originally the headquarters of the Knights Templar, a Catholic military order which in their distinctive white mantles with a red cross, were among the most skilled fighting units of the Crusades.

The name Temple Cowley also recalls the medieval house.

Most of the property dates from the 18th century, but parts of a 15th-century manor house and barn are still visible, and there's a gym, pool and spa, as well as the landscaped gardens, river trails and a pretty village near by.

Its sister hotel is the Voco Oxford Spires hotel off the Abingdon Road.

Hotel manager James Bell said: “We’re thrilled to be given this accolade for Oxfordshire.

"Our team strive to deliver the best in class, so this is a testament to everyone’s hard work and dedication.”
