THE first 250 trees as part of the Queen’s Green Canopy programme will be planted in Wittenham Clumps today (Friday, December 2).

Councillor Susanna Pressel, Oxfordshire County Council’s chairman, will be joining Oxfordshire’s Lord Lieutenant, Marjorie Glasgow, to plant the trees.

New British citizens living in Oxfordshire were offered the opportunity to donate a tree for planting on their behalf or to be presented with one at their citizenship ceremony.

This was part of the wider Queen’s Green Canopy programme, first introduced as part of Her Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee earlier in the year.

Since the start of the programme in February, 825 trees have been donated and 396 collected for planting.

Ms Pressel said: “I’m delighted to be planting a tree on behalf of the people of Oxfordshire, especially since this is National Tree Week.

“The trees come from the citizenship ceremonies in County Hall, which are always moving occasions, particularly this year when we have been donating a tree to each new citizen.

“With these trees they can ‘put down roots’ either in their own gardens or in our beautiful Oxfordshire countryside.”

Following the wishes of His Majesty The King upon the passing of Her Majesty, the initiative has been extended until the end of March 2023 to allow more people to plant trees in memoriam.
