Most of the Low Traffic Neighbour (LTN) planters positioned on junctions with Cowley Road are covered in rubbish, new photographs taken by the Oxford Mail have shown.

Pictures taken this weekend show the traffic filters covered in bottles, cans and even metal poles and an Amstel glass.

The litter-ladened planters have been noted on Circus Street, Temple Street and Rectory Road, amongst others.

The controversial traffic scheme was installed in East Oxford in May and ever since the county council has faced an on-going battle against vandals who seek to damage and, even, destroy the LTNs.

Low Traffic Neighbourhoods (LTNs) aim to encourage active travel such as cycling and walking or use of public transport.

The scheme has divided opinion in the city, with some supporting the reduction in traffic and others arguing it creates congestion and pollution elsewhere.

In the months since the LTNs were put in place, bollards have been ripped from the ground, run over, set on fire and the wooden planters have been graffitied and their plants pulled out.

The county council has warned opponents of the scheme who vandalise the traffic filters that the cost of repairing it comes at a price to the tax payer, urging people instead make their concerns known through the council’s public consultation.

Oxfordshire County Council has been approached for comment.
