A MAN from Oxford was charged with shoplifting in two supermarkets in Headington.

Thames Valley Police said following an investigation a man has been charged with two counts of shoplifting.

Andrew Brown, 56, of Henry Taunt Close, Headington, was charged today ( Sunday, November 20) and remanded in custody.

The police said the first charge relates to an incident at the Co-op in London Road at 5.30pm on October 27, when a man put £76-worth of steaks in a bag and made off, after being challenged by a member of staff.

The other charge relates to an incident at Sainsbury’s on the same road, at 2pm on November 7, when a man stole meat, confectionary and a basket to the value of £84.

Brown is due to appear at Oxford Magistrates’ Court tomorrow ( Monday, November 21).

Shoplifting is an offence under the Theft Act 1968. People convicted in court of shoplifting can be fined or jailed for up to six months if the goods are worth less than £200, or for a maximum of seven years if they are worth more than £200.
