Oxford’s Extinction Rebellion staged a mass ‘die-in’ demonstration in the city centre to raise awareness about climate change.

The environmentalist group is undertaking two weeks of activism in the city to coincide with COP27 -  which is taking place in Egypt until November 18 - by holding demonstrations, handing out leaflets and speaking with shoppers.

Demonstrators took to Cornmarket on Friday (November 11) and lay down on the floor, covering themselves in white sheets while a drummer performed a single sombre note.

While members were lying on the floor, others stood behind them with signs that read ‘climate justice for all’ and ‘END FOSSIL FUELS another world is possible’.

The theatrical street protest, called a ‘die-in’, is a form of protest where participants pretend to be dead.

The aim of Extinction Rebellion in this case being to raise awareness of the human cost of climate change.
