Fried chicken diner Station Grill is to be demolished in advance of the 12-month closure of Botley Road.

The county council and Network Rail announced yesterday that the road would be closed at the Botley Road rail bridge from January 9.

The lengthy closure is necessary according to the council and Network Rail to accommodate work on moving utility cables, replacing the rail bridge, and building a new western entrance to the station.

As a result, Station Grill is to be demolished, and the area could then be used as a turning circle for buses while the closure is in place.

Network Rail spokesman David Paull said demolition would take place in December.

Dana Hussain, who has been running Station Grill since it opened in 2019, said he was disappointed.

He said: "We have been working hard to build up this business.

"The landlord told us a while ago this was going to happen.

"We're looking for somewhere else in Oxford."

It will be the end of a fast food era as the building housing Station Grill was formerly the legendary greasy spoon Mick's Cafe.

Oxford Mail:

Mick Harris ran Mick's Cafe for 27 years until his retirement in 2013.

Station Grill has been serving kebabs, mixed kebabs, burgers, wraps and chips.

Mr Hussain said in 2019 he has lots of experience in the catering trade, having run Posh Nosh in Abingdon for eight years.

Network Rail said in a statement: "While there is still detailed work to be done to finalise our plans for what is a very complex project, the most likely scenario now is that the road under the bridge will be closed to all vehicles, apart from emergency services, for 12 months from January to December 2023.

"We appreciate the need to set out our plans in detail so people can plan ahead, but we also need to take the time to meet with those who will be impacted the most, so that we can understand their requirements and how we can help."

The currently proposed start date for the works and closure is January 9.

The county council added: "Pedestrian and cycle access through the closure points is planned to be maintained throughout - although the specific route through work may change.

"It is planned that buses will operate to either side of the closure so those on through journeys will need to do a short walk and change buses."
