A man walked into his sleeping victim’s bedroom before sexually assaulting him.

Daniel Wareham, 26, had been due to stand trial at Oxford Crown Court this week on two allegations.

Appearing before Judge Maria Lamb on Monday afternoon, Wareham, formerly of Southfield Road, Oxford, but now living in South London, pleaded guilty to the more serious charge of sexual assault by penetration.

The court heard he had been let into his male victim’s home on November 14, 2019, by the man’s housemate. He went on to touch the victim, who was asleep.

Wareham’s barrister, Paul Edwards, said his client had no previous convictions and asked the judge to adjourn for a pre-sentence report to be compiled by the probation service.

Judge Lamb agreed, but warned the defendant that the fact she was ordering a probation report gave no clue as to the sentence he would receive.

“You must come to court prepared for all eventualities,” she said.

He was bailed to return to the crown court on December 8. He was told that he must sign on at his local police station as his plea to the charge meant his name would be placed on the sex offender’s register.

Charles Ward-Jackson appeared for the Crown Prosecution Service during the short hearing.
