MOTHER has thanked the John Radcliffe Hospital and emergency services staff for saving the life of her two-year-old son.

Lowri Scott – who runs N Scott Autos, a family-run garage in Frilford, near Abingdon, with her husband Nathan – said she felt ‘fortunate beyond words or measures’ after her son George made a complete recovery after he suffered from viral encephalitis.

Encephalitis is an inflammation of the brain, most commonly caused by a viral infection.
The young boy became unwell at home this month and suffered from a seizure which lasted for almost two hours.

After calling the emergency services, paramedics arrived at the home and placed the two-year-old boy into an induced coma before he was rushed to the Headington hospital for treatment.

Mrs Scott said: “Our son George is now home and thankfully he is very safe and well but one week ago today it was almost a very different story.

“He suddenly became very unwell at home and it turned out to be viral encephalitis but thankfully George has made a complete recovery and suffered no brain damage whatsoever.

“To see him now, it’s difficult to believe anything happened as he is the same happy, funny little boy he has always been.

“We feel fortunate beyond words or measure and have several people we’d like to publicly thank.

“First on the scene were Burford firefighters, followed by the paramedics in the ambulances and air ambulance which was diverted from the Isle of Wight.

“The John Radcliffe Hospital Resus team, Paediatric Intensive Care Unit and Children’s Ward are all incredible and provided world-class care which undoubtedly saved our son.

“The care that George received from beginning to end was nothing short of phenomenal and we feel overwhelmed with gratitude for our wonderful NHS.”

Mrs Scott also thanked the Ronald McDonald House, a charity which provides places for families to stay while their children received medical care, for providing herself and her husband Nathan with free accommodation at Oxford House in Woodlands Road, Headington, so they could stay close to George during his assessments and treatments.

She added: “Finally, a huge thank you to our family and friends who provided truly invaluable support, during what was a living nightmare.

“I would also like to give a personal, heartfelt thank you to our rock, my gorgeous husband Nathan – you are the best possible partner and father we could ever wish for and we love you so very much.”
